Greg Hixson and Tom Austin Jr. Get Wins Before Rain Claim Balance of Black Rock Program
DUNDEE, NY - With a thundering band of storms brushing through the Northeast on Friday night, the Black Rock Speedway program hustled through to get the majority of the card in. But at 8:15, just after the sportsman feature, the night’s action would not only get rained out, it would become poured out.
The Hoselton Auto Mall and Home Necessities sponsored the night, which only ran two features. Ironically, the two features that ran were those sponsored by each of the night sponsors. With two of the eight features, as well as all the heats, completed, along with 102 cars in the pits, there will be a various number of rain dates used to make up these features.
Greg Hixson rekindled his form of 1991 when he won the Mr. DIRT Sportsman Championship as he picked up his first win since his return in the Hoselton Auto Mall Crate Sportsman Division.
The former Black Rock Speedway Head Starter paced the field from the drop of the green flag, a position that he has been used to this season due to the handicap, but on a humid and sticky night, he would stay there the entire distance.
“Scott Schrader helped me out a bunch and got this car running a lot better tonight,” said a jubilated Hixson in Victory Lane.
The driver of the Swarthout Recycling/ Doug Kent’s Bowling Center No. 1s ran the bottom lane to perfection and pulled away from the competition to leave no doubt that he is fully back.
Daryl Hilkert also had his best run of the season, coming home in second in his No. 4.
Justin Wright continued to stay strong in his No. 19w, despite scraping the outside wall on lap 6 but was still able to hang on to third.
Eric Giguere’s first trip to Black Rock resulted in a solid fourth place showing, with Dave Yehl also stepping up to the occasion, rounding out the top-five.
Brian Wilson took the lead when the first lap of the Home Necessites bandit feature was finally completed, after Kailey Wassner rolled her No. 82 over the bank in turn three after contact with Josh Sharpsteen.
Wilson would hand over the lead to Erica Bell who would not be able to hold off the dominant “Rocker” Austin, as the point leader took the lead on lap 7 and would not look back, capturing yet another win on a superb night for “The Rock” at “The Rock”.
Other 2007 winners Kreg Crooker, Erica Bell and Dylan Cecce would finished behind the No. 88a, with Cody Moorehouse rounding out the top-five.
The 358-modifieds had 20 cars and saw Dave DuBois from Corfu, NY pick up a popular heat win in his No. 012. They will run their feature on July 6.
The super stock heat win went to the ageless Sparky Hills from Gang Mills. Their attention will turn towards the $1,000-to-win Bud Foster Memorial next week, with the make-up for this Friday taking place July 27.
The Ladies’ Street Stock/ Pro Truck race will be postponed until July 20 when they will rumble in the combined class event.
The Street Stocks, Pro Trucks, and 4-cylinders will all have their features made up next week on a night sponsored by Suzuki Motorcycles. Racing action will pick up at 6:45 p.m. and be just $10 for 10 features, including a $1,000-to-win Super Stock event.
