A Sutherland Sweep at Black Rock

Rich Vleck, DUNDEE, NY (May 13, 2011)- On an ominous Friday the 13th with rain looming in the area, the stars aligned for the Sutherland clan.

With rain eventually moving in on the Black Rock Speedway midway through the feature events, the rush was on to get the fourth regular season show in 2011.  When the final checkered flag fell to showers, it had taken just two hours to complete the program.

Serenity Sutherland passed her brother Trevor with five laps remaining in the sportsman feature and drove away to pick up her first win in the crate-powered class.

Trevor held the early advantage off of strong restarts and seemed like the class of the field while his sister fought off strong competition for second.  After what would be the final restart of the race on lap eight though, the long green flag run played into Serenity’s hands as she reeled in her brother.

The two made contact coming to complete lap 15 and things were tenuous for a few seconds, but with a solid advantage over the rest of the pack, they sorted it out with a lead change.

“It was a little stressful running against my brother but we got through it and it worked out just fine,” stated the hometown favorite that now resides in Rochester.

Both Serenity and Trevor won their heats and used quality starting positions to keep themselves out of a tangled pack of top competitors.  Fran Hilton charged his way through the pack to finish in third while Chris Silvers and Gary Hotaling rounded out the top five.

Serenity and Trevor’s cousin Quinn used the Sutherland Family mojo built up in the sportsman feature as he dominated the late model feature for his first feature win in over a year.

The Dundee resident put on a clinic on the pack after he took the lead from heat winner Brandon Smith on a lap three restart and then took off from the pack to win comfortably over Smith and former champion Dave DuBois.

In the first of two 13 lap street stock features on Friday the 13th, Chuck Winslow charged underneath Frank Guererri Jr. on lap six to pick up his first feature win at BRS.

Winslow was strong all night and pulled away for a half-dozen laps after taking the lead but in the closing laps Nate Daggett shrunk the gap down and made a worthy bid off the final corner for the win.

Last Week’s winner Bob Buono was third with past champions Chris Fisher and Guererri completing the top five.

In the second feature, Nate Peckham held the early lead but Bob Buono was steady in his No. 64 and would drive into the race lead on lap five and hold on for his second win of the year.

Winslow was strong in this feature as well, driving up from his inverted starting spot of eighth and making multiple bids for the lead, in the end settling for second.  Jared Hill ran up to third ahead of Peckham and Scott Sebring.

Mike Smith continued his dominance of the IMCA Modified division as he inherited the lead on lap four when local Rich Karlnoski bobbled in turn three and drove away to his third straight win.

The Arkport, NY driver paced the field in yet another caution-free event this season.  Behind the No. 96 were Jerry Lobdell Jr. and Scott Bennett to complete the podium positions.

Brandon Morseman put on a performance in the 4-cylinder feature, the final feature of the night, as he was sliding through the slick corners with the rain intensifying.  It is the first official win for the No. 44 this season.

The race would be checkered with 18 of the advertised 20 laps completed while Morseman held a comfortable advantage over Ray Speicher and Scott Bradley who completed the top-three.

Zach Teed stayed undefeated for the season in the Home Necessities Bandits feature at the beginning of the night as he grabbed the lead in the first corner and cruised to his third win of 2011.  Point leader Allison Teed was second, followed by Lisa Cornish.

Racing returns at 6:45 p.m. next Friday Night with an American Legion Tribute as part of the Fab Five Card.  For more information, visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
