THE DOCTOR OF MODIFIED RACING PUTS ANOTHER CHECK MARK IN THE WIN COLUMN AS HE VISITS OUTLAW SPEEDWAYS VICTORY LANE FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 2026
Mr. Smooth, Marc Minutolo claims 2nd Annual Freedom 40 Hobby Stock Feature. Tim Guild takes home 2nd Crate Sportsman win of 2026. Craig Decamp (Mini Stock) and Jimmy Grant (Street Stocks) remain unstoppable with both claiming victory.
Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.
(Dundee, NY) Under overcast and very windy conditions the Outlaw Speedway was able to put their seventh official show into the record books and victory lane was greeted by drivers who have all been victorious in 2026 having won features earlier in the season.
Some of the biggest names in Modified Racing in the northeast turned out once again for their regular 30 lap feature with local Dundee favorite, Brady Fultz along with York’s, Justin Wright bringing the seventeen car feature field to the opening green with Wright immediately getting the jump and leading the field until the first and only caution flag of the event would wave on lap six.
On the restart Wright continued to set a torrid pace distancing himself from the rest of the field including the likes of Danny Johnson and Matt Sheppard who had worked their way into spots two and three by the halfway mark.
With no yellow flags to bunch the field, Johnson and Sheppard had their work cut out as Wright kept a safe distance between himself and a pair of veteran Modified drivers that have well over 1,100 feature wins between them.
Super Matt Sheppard was able to march from his tenth starting spot on the opening grid to the third position and was challenging The Doctor of Modified Racing for second after lining up fifth on the start.
Lap after lap Sheppard tried the low side of Johnson but to no avail and once Johnson found his groove, he was able to put some daylight between himself and Super Matt and was closing in on Wright for the race lead.
With twenty in the books Wright still had a comfortable margin and in clean air was able to keep a safe distance between himself and The Big Boy Motorsports machine of Johnson until lap traffic became a factor for the lead group with five laps remaining.
With Wright still in control, Johnson was charging hard and finally made his move for the lead between turns three and four with two to go and once in front there was no looking back as The Doctor preformed another of his classic house calls in route to his second feature win in The Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modified Division at Outlaw in 2026 backing up his earlier season win on April 17.
A disappointed Justin Wright had put on a brilliant performance but at the end of the day came up a bit short settling for second at the double checkered flags with Sheppard completing the podium and in doing so picked up the Hard Charger advancing seven positions.
Fourth place went to Baldwinsville speedster, Michael Maresca who advanced from ninth with Johnstown’s Bobby Varin completing the top five piloting one of a trio of Tyler Siri owned machines.
Outlaw Speedway saluted EMT, Police, Firemen and Military Veterans as part of the May 29 event and appropriately it took an Army Veteran, Tim Guild to put his machine in victory lane for the second time in 2026.
Watkins Glen native, Craig Gardner and Corning’s Collin Brown would bring the twenty-three -car Knapp and Schlappi Lumber Crate Sportsman field to green for their twenty-lap feature, however it did not take Guild long to move through traffic from starting spot five and take command and from there go on to the win after claiming the top spot two weeks earlier on May 15.
Bath, NY young gun and third gen fifteen-year-old pilot, Colton Coots was having another stellar run and was leading when bad luck once again found his #84 machine exiting the event this time with an expired power plant.
From there Guild had to use his many years of Modified and Sportsman experience to hold off a pair of up and coming young talents in Justice Mayo of Beaver Dams and Manchester’s Chris Darling to pick up the win as both Mayo and Darling lined up just behind Guild in starting row four and as the trio flashed under the double checkered flags it was Guild taking the win with Mayo and Darling finding podium finishes.
Dundee’s Brent Ayers put on another outstanding effort starting in position twelve and moved forward to nail fourth at the finish with Addison’s Cayden Lawson rounding the top five.
The biggest feature of the night was the highly anticipated Freedom 40 for Addison, Corning, Hornell, Wellsville NAPA Hobby Stocks and with a solid fifteen car field on hand all looking for the winner’s share of $2,000.
Event organizer, United States Marine and 2024 Outlaw Speedway Hobby Stock Track Champion, Jeredd Dennis had spent countless hours putting this 2nd Annual Freedom 40 Event in motion which included tons of lap money and it did not stop there as he was able to donate a sizable amount of cash to the VA Center in Bath.
At the beginning of the forty-lap feature grind it was Jesse Balance of Corning along with Cameron Mills young lady competitor, Meadow Dgien leading the charge into turn one, however all eyes were on fifth place starter, Marc Minutolo along with Danny Kerrick who started eighth on the opening grid as the pair had won all five previously run feature events in 2026.
All drivers knew that attrition would play a big part in the outcome of the event and nobody played it more to perfection than Mr. Smooth, Marc Minutolo has he used his many years of full fender experience in placing his machine in victory lane and in doing so took home the $2,000 check along with the 6’ winner’s trophy.
Coming across the line in second place after starting sixth was Penn Yan’s Brighton Grant who continues to have a very impressive season.
Completing the podium was Jesse Balance who raced within the lead pack the entire forty lap distance.
The Nature Boy, Mike Stone of Campbell finished right where he started in coming home fourth with Dundee’s Jared Hill completing the top five advancing two positions from start to finish.
Other notable finishers in the Freedom 40 event, found four time 2026 feature winner and 2025 Freedom 40 Champion Danny Kerrick finishing seventh one spot behind 2026 Rookie, Jackson Dunning who was only competing in his third event ever dating back to the Hoag Memorial of 2025 and for the Corning, NY High School student it was a win of sorts in only his second outing of this season.
Jimmy Grant made short work of the Swarthout Recycling Street Stock feature and albeit the numbers were a bit off the intense competition made up for it.
Coming into the event Grant has been almost unstoppable having previously visited victory lane on three separate occasions with Willy Easling, Glenn Whritenour and Brett Crawford the only others to hit pay dirt thus far in class.
Grant would start the twenty-lap A Main in position six as Chemung’s Gene Sharpsteen and Beaver Dams pilot, Joe Giardina brought the field to green from their front row starting spots.
Once out in front Grant would take no prisoners as he cruised to win four on the campaign backing up previous victories on April 4, April 24 and May 15.
2024 Track Champion, Gene Sharpsteen would have his best finish of the season in claiming second with last week’s feature winner, Brett Crawford finishing third after lining up fourth at the start.
April 17 winner, Willy Easling finished in position four with fellow Beaver Dams native, Joe Giardina completing the top five and still looking for his first win of the 2026 campaign.
Completing the night of action was the MR Grafix Mini Stock Division with eleven hungry starters all looking to find the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Victory Lane.
Jack Ormsby of Penn Yan would bring the field to green; however, all eyes were on Craig DeCamp who came into the night on a tear claiming three feature wins thus far.
DeCamp of Beaver Dams would start the twenty-lap feature in spot eight with last week’s winner and 2025 Mini Stock Track Champion, Zach Daugherty of Elmira lining up one row ahead of DeCamp in starting position six.
Like he has done on three previous occasions, Decamp was able to quickly move through traffic disposing of several top contenders including Daugherty, former track champion, Jayson Smart and Kenneth Evans.
DeCamp would roll to win four on the campaign and stretch his point advantage as Outlaw now flips the calendar to the month of June.
Evans would hold on for the runner-up spot as he was chased across the line by Daugherty who completed the top three podium.
Jayson Smart would advance from seventh to fourth with Prattsburgh’s Mike Ayers completing the top five after lining up ninth at the start.
Congratulations to all competitors.
Up next at Outlaw Speedway on Friday, June 5, 2026, it will be $5 Fan Appreciation Night featuring a FAST 5* Show along with Big Rig Truck Races.
The previously rained out Roy Silvers Memorial originally set for early May will also be made up on June 5.
